Formalising Pragmatic Information for Natural Language Generation

چکیده

The main aim of the work presented here is to demonstrate that certain contextual information, traditionally considered to be beyond the scope of semantic representations, can be formalised sufficiently to allow its use in natural language generation (NLG) decisions, in particular syntactic choice. This ‘pragmatic’ information, where the term pragmatic is interpreted as indicating any reference to the context of language use, will also be useful in the interpretation of natural language, and so the representations proposed here will have potential applications throughout natural language processing (NLP). The motivation for the general approach stems from a view of natural language utterances carrying out particular ‘communicative functions’ which must be considered during the production and analysis of any utterance. A ‘split discourse model’ is presented to allow the definition and use of the required functions, the main feature of the model being an explicit separation between a speaker’s own representation of a discourse a hearer’s assumed representation. Certain features of surface form, most importantly intonational features, are interpreted as indicators of the function which a particular utterance is intended to perform. The thesis presents an account of these surface features, both intonational and syntactic, and how they can be selected (and also interpreted) using the split discourse model. The approach will contribute to the ability to generate contextually appropriate language, and also assist in the understanding of real world uses of natural language.

The Effect of Natural and Classroom Settings on Iranian Learners’ Pragmatic Competence: Length of Residence Versus Intervention

The present investigation sought to comparatively explore the effect of length of residence (LOR) as well as EFL instruction on the pragmatic competence of Iranian learners. The participants were 45 EFL learners in Iran and 45 learners in Canada selected based on snowball sampling and each group was divided into three sub-groups based on the years of learning English in an EFL or a natural sett...

Pragmatic Competence Development: Demystifying the Impact of Task Types and EFL Students' Perceptions

Interlanguage pragmatics, as an inseparable part of communicative competence, has been emphasized as an ultimate objective in language learning. This study explored the perceptions of Iranian English as a foreign language (EFL) students regarding interlanguage pragmatics and the impact of textbooks tasks on shaping their pragmatic competence. To accomplish this objective, 137 senior EFL student...

Unified Pragmatic Models for Generating and Following Instructions

We extend models for both following and generating natural language instructions by adding an explicit pragmatic layer. These pragmatics-enabled models explicitly reason about why speakers produce certain instructions, and about how listeners will react upon hearing them. Given learned base listener and speaker models, we build a pragmatic listener that uses the base speaker to reason counterfa...

Syntactic Choice from Speaker Intentions

Various pragmatic accounts of the functions of alternative syntactic constructions are available, in terms of presuppositions, information structure, or speaker intentions. Following a consideration of some of the various restrictions applying to the use of the alternative syntactic forms, the paper reviews some of these pragmatic accounts. It then proposes a characterisation of speaker intenti...

Formalizing the Dynamics of Semantic Sys- tems in Dialogue

Semantic change happens both in the long term (over years and decades) and in the very short term (in a single dialogue)1. An exploratory study of a Map Task dialogue indicates that dialogue participants coordinate on an ad-hoc vocabulary and associated concepts (meanings) to enable information exchange, and that adhoc vocabularies can be cobbled together from a heterogeneous mix of “microvocab...
